Sweet potato, also known as tuberous sweet potato, white sweet potato, yam, sweet potato, red yam, etc.is a one-year plant in the family Convolvulaceae, containing dietary fiber, beta-carotene, vitamins A, B, C, E and potassium, iron, copper, selenium, calcium, etc., with very high nutritional value.
It is one of the top ten best vegetables selected by the World Health Organization. However, there are some considerations when eating sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes must be thoroughly steamed or cooked until soft before consumption,
because the starch granules in them cannot be broken down without high temperatures and are difficult to digest. Sweet potatoes contain an enzyme called oxidase, which can produce a large amount of carbon dioxide gas in the human gastrointestinal tract if consumed in excess.
This can cause abdominal distension, hiccups, and flatulence.
Sweet potatoes have a high sugar content; eating too much can stimulate excessive gastric acid secretion, causing a burning sensation.
The stomach contracts more due to the overproduction of gastric acid, which can lead to acid reflux into the esophagus, causing regurgitation of acid. When eating sweet potatoes, it's best to pair them with some pickles,
which can effectively inhibit gastric acid.In addition, the sugar in sweet potatoes is abundant; if not fully absorbed by the body, the residue left in the intestines can ferment and cause abdominal discomfort. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), those with dampness blocking the spleen and stomach or food stagnation should be cautious about eating sweet potatoes.
The disadvantage of sweet potatoes is that they lack protein and fat, but now that people's lives are more affluent,
sweet potatoes are no longer used as a staple food. The missing nutrients can be supplemented through other dietary sources.
As explained by Professor Gao from the Chinese Nutrition Association, sweet potatoes and persimmons should not be consumed at the same time in large quantities;at least five hours apart is recommended. If they are eaten together, the sugar in the stomach ferments, increasing gastric acid secretion, and the tannins and pectin in persimmons can react to form hard lumps, potentially causing bleeding or ulcers in the stomach if consumed excessively.
In case of abdominal discomfort, a gastroscopy should be performed to check for gastric bleeding or ulcers.
Sweet potatoes lack protein and fat, so they should be eaten with vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich foods to avoid nutritional imbalances.
Most importantly, sweet potatoes are best consumed during the lunchtime golden period.
This is because after eating sweet potatoes, the calcium contained in them needs about 4 to 5 hours for absorption, and the sunlight at noon helps with calcium absorption. Therefore, if all the calcium from a meal of sweet potatoes can be absorbed by dinner time, it won't interfere with the absorption of other foods' calcium.
