Origin of Sandwiches
The history of the sandwich is almost as old as eggs and cakes. As for the origin story of the sandwich, there is a fascinating tale behind it.
Originally, "sandwich" was the name of an obscure town in southeastern England. In this town lived Earl John Montagu of Sandwich, who was deeply engrossed in card games. His servants found it challenging to cater to his meals, so they placed some dishes, eggs, and sausage between slices of bread,
allowing him to eat while playing cards. To everyone's surprise, Montagu took a liking to this food and casually named it "sandwich". From then on, whenever he was hungry, he would simply call for "sandwiches".
Other gamblers followed his lead, and they started eating sandwiches while playing cards as well.Soon, the sandwich became popular across the British Isles and even spread to the European continent. It eventually reached America too.Today's sandwiches are far from being as monotonous as they were at first; they have evolved into many new varieties. For example, there is a "nightclub sandwich" with chicken or chicken slices, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, a "lawn sandwich" with salty beef, Swiss cheese, pickles, and Russian dressing on rye bread, and a "tea-time sandwich" with fish paste, cucumber, watercress, and tomatoes. In France, making sandwiches no longer necessarily involves slices of bread;instead, they are often made using briocheor rolls.Sandwiches made with French baguettes are even called "submarine rolls"! Or a pancake. A sandwich made from French baguette is also called a "submarine sandwich"!
