Why Is Lunch Meat Called That
Canned meat loaf. This term originated from foreign countries because in the 1980s in Hong Kong, people were very busy, so many people used canned meat loaf as their lunch to save time. In the past, foreigners would not go to tea houses or fast-food restaurants for lunch like Hong Kong people; instead, they would eat at their companies. However, cooking was not allowed at the workplace, and lunch times were short, so most employees would make sandwiches for lunch. Many employees enjoyed putting slices of meat between the bread slices in their sandwiches. These sandwiches were generally not eaten for breakfast or dinner. Over time, those slices of meat placed in the sandwich came to be known as 'canned meat loaf'. Over time, the slices of meat sandwiched in sandwiches came to be known as 'lunch meat'.
