Emperor Liu Yu of the Song Dynasty ordered soldiers to have dry food during their breaks for exercises. This dry food was almost the prototype of the current Double Ninth Cake. During the Tang Dynasty, the military customs of the Double Ninth Festival were further developed, and people were encouraged to climb mountains, which not only exercised their bodies but also had the meaning of rising step by step.
