Benefits of Waterwort-Includes its health benefits and nutritional value

Water dropwort is a highly nutritious wild vegetable that is much loved by people. Water dropwort has many benefits, as recorded in the Ben Cao Gang Mu: "Water dropwort has a neutral nature and sweet taste, entering the lungs and liver meridians. It strengthens tendons and bones, soothes the liver, improves vision, lowers blood pressure, and has anti-inflammatory effects."In addition, water dropwort contains abundant glutamic acid, which is the main component of monosodium glutamate (MSG), adding natural freshness with a fresh fragrance that can make one's appetite increase.

The benefits of water dropwort

Though it is a wild vegetable, the nutritional value of water dropwort does not fall short of expensive medicinal herbs. Water dropwort has many benefits recorded in texts such as The Classic of Materia Medica · Food Therapy, The Special Record of Famous Doctors, and Dian Nan Materia Medica.

1Effects on the uterus

Water dropwort has effects similar to those of wheat ergot. Its extract causes significant contraction when tested on animal excised uteri or intestines. The alcohol extract of the whole plant has oxytocin-like contractions on the uterus. The effective components in the whole plant cause contractions in mice, rats, and cats' uteri. It enhances the contractions in the uteri of rats (unpregnant), rabbits (pregnant and non-pregnant), and cats (non-pregnant). A 0.08-0.8g/kg intravenous injection of water dropwort extract in pregnant rabbits results in enhanced uterine contractions, increased muscle tension, and frequency;Similarly, administration by stomach tube at a dose equivalent to 5.263g/kg also leads to similar effects. The components that excite the uterus dissolve in water and aqueous alcohol but not or barely in pure alcohol, petroleum ether, anhydrous ether, or chloroform. Water dropwort extract has strong effects on un-mated guinea pig uteri (similarly effective for fresh juice and dried medicinal parts).

2Effects on stopping bleeding Water dropwort contains bursic acid which can stop bleeding. Water dropwort extracts, when administered intravenously or intramuscularly in doses of 2-3ml at intervals of 2-4 hours daily up to a maximum of 15ml, show obvious hemostatic effects on various bleeding patients.

For hemophilia patients, it increases the resistance of blood clots. Giving water dropwort decoction by stomach tube in small amounts (equivalent to 0.02g/10g body weight) reduces the bleeding time in half or more mice; larger doses (equivalent to 0.06g/10g body weight) extend the bleeding time. Using volatile extract of water dropwort intraperitoneally in mice shortens the bleeding time (more significant at higher doses). In rabbits, volatile extract of water dropwort shortens clotting time. However, some contradictory reports exist. Water dropwort extracts from plants grown under hot climate and dry soil conditions significantly prolong blood coagulation time in rats when injected subcutaneously; 0.1ml at a 10% concentration has no effect on rabbit's clotting. Effects on the heart and blood vesselsAlcohol extract of water dropwort produces temporary blood pressure reduction when administered intravenously to dogs, cats, rabbits, and rats; this effect is not antagonized by atropine (80μg/kg). The effective components in the whole plant also cause temporary blood pressure reduction in mice, cats, rabbits, and dogs. This effect cannot be blocked by atropine but can be inhibited by prono-thanol.

3It also dilates coronary vessels of in situ dog hearts and isolated guinea pig hearts.

Water dropwort extract inhibits the fibrillation caused by ouabain in isolated cat hearts. Intravenous injection of water dropwort extract causes transient hypotension in rabbits but does not reverse the pressor effect of adrenaline. Decoction or volatile extract of water dropwort administered intravenously to anesthetized dogs also produces a temporary decrease in blood pressure; atropine cannot affect this effect. However, it can reduce blood pressure significantly when given subcutaneously to dogs, with some patients showing a reduction of 20-50% in respiratory movements. Water dropwort extract also causes contraction of the trachea and small intestine smooth muscles. Preliminary inhibition by atropine leads to further contraction when water dropwort alcohol extract is used; then, the effect recovers. In addition, water dropwort volatile extract administered intraperitoneally inhibits edema caused by dextran or carrageenan in rats and decreases vascular permeability induced by serotonin. It also accelerates healing of stress ulcers in mice. Water dropwort has diuretic effects. In rabbits with artificial fever, water dropwort shows mild antipyretic activity. Preservation methods for water dropwortEvery spring, wild water dropwort can be found abundantly in the countryside.

4However, after the season passes, it is difficult to find fresh water dropwort.

Don't worry, here are some tips from us on how to preserve water dropwort so you can enjoy its flavor even during winter and cold months.1. After harvesting, remove yellow leaves and impurities, trim roots with scissors, and rinse repeatedly in clean water;2. Boil a large pot of water; when boiling, add the water dropwort until it turns deep green, then quickly remove them;3. Rinse the boiled water dropwort under cold water to cool down and gently squeeze out excess moisture;4. Pack in freezer bags and freeze quickly inside the refrigerator's freezer compartment for easy access when needed. First, use atropine to cause a mild inhibition in the guinea pig's small intestine, then the vitexin extract can cause contraction of the intestinal tube before it returns to its original state. In addition, intraperitoneal injection of vitexin extract can inhibit edema and increased capillary permeability caused by dextran and carrageenan in rats' lower limbs as well as those caused by serotonin. It has a 90% inhibitory rate on Shay ulcers and can accelerate the healing of stress-induced ulcers. It has diuretic effects on mice. Radicchio slightly reduces fever in rabbits with artificial fever.
